Birth Stones

The Origin of Birthstones

While some sources such as 1st Century Roman-Jewish historian Josephus tell us birthstones originated on the breastplate of Aaron, with each representing the 12 months of the year and accruing 12 signs of the zodiac, others say the breastplate’s stones signified each of the 12 tribes of Israel. Eighth and 9th Century religious treaties were written associating particular stones with apostles. And while more modern accounts, including folklore, do not identify the breastplate or religious connections, some claim wearing one during its assigned month enhances its therapeutic properties.Throughout history, accepted birthstones rotated in and out, with style and availability sometimes determining which stones would reign. In 1912, the National Association of Jewelers standardized the list, which was updated in 1952 by the Jewelry Industry Council of America. Among the changes were the addition of alexandrite to the month of June, citrine to November, pink tourmaline for October (pink was key), replacing alternate lapis with zircon in December, and switching around March’s primary and alternate gemstones of aquamarine and bloodstone. In 2002, tanzanite was added as a December stone.

Mystical Birthstone

Bloodstone
Village Jewellers - Phone: (02) 6295 7955 Shop 13, Manuka Village Manuka, ACT 260

In the ancient world, Bloodstone (Heliotrope) was considered to be the most beautiful of the Jaspers, a deep, earthy green gem emboldened with spots of bright red. Called the Sun Stone, and later Christ’s Stone, its energy carries the purity of blood and inherently speaks of life and birth, vitality and strength, passion and courage. As a talisman it is both mystical and magical, and its virtues are protective and nurturing.

The most widely known legend of this stone comes from the Middle Ages and claims the “Blood Stone” was formed at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, when the blood of his wounds fell onto the dark green earth and turned to stone. Another version declares the blood of Christ, which flowed from the fatal spear-thrust, fell upon a Green Jasper lying at the foot of the Cross, and from this sprang the Bloodstone variety of Jasper. Today, as then, Bloodstone is regarded as a gem of noble sacrifice and can offer courage and solace to all who are called to give of themselves for the good of others. It elicits the highest, most altruistic character of those who wear or carry it.

The Blood Stone, however, was treasured long before the time of Christ, known in antiquity as Heliotrope, the Sun Stone.

Other varieties of Australian opal include crystal opal, a transparent gem with strong play of colour and boulder opal consisting of a natural ironstone backing with a thin top layer of colourful opal.

Opal may be purchased as a solid cabochon or as the less valuable doublet or triplet.  A doublet consists of a thin layer of fine natural opal bonded to a dark backing. A triplet also consists of a thin layer of fine opal bonded to a dark backing and a transparent quartz top. These stones require careful handling and care so as not to damage them.

The Pearl is regarded as one of the 5 precious gemstones of old alongside ruby, diamond, emerald and sapphire. The pearl is treasured for its beautiful lustre and iridescence which are the result of the nacre which has been deposited by the mollusc around an irritant in layers to form a spherical bead (if all goes well).

Pearls can be classified into various types, the natural pearl which grows without any human intervention is very rare and only accounts for a tiny fraction of the modern pearl market. Cultured pearls are the result of a small bead being implanted into the soft tissues of the oyster to produce an irritation which ultimately becomes the pearl. These types of cultured pearls included the Japanese Akoya pearls which are found in the coastal water of Japan.

The South Sea cultured pearls consist of white, black and golden coloured pearls which are found in tropical waters of Australia, Indonesia, Tahiti, and The Philippines. These pearls are prized for their large size and lustre and are the standout in the pearl world. Village Jewellers - Phone: (02) 6295 7955 Shop 13, Manuka Village Manuka, ACT 260

The name ruby comes from the Latin ruber and refers to the gemstones red colour. Ruby like sapphire is a member of the corundum family and is the next hardest gemstone after diamond making it a very suitable gemstone for all types of jewellery.
